So in WA we have a pretty known issue with people flipping puppies. They are typically based in Pierce, Bellingham, and Yakima. My wife found a dog she was interested in up north. We contacted the owner and she sent us “new photos today” of the puppy. The sky was perfectly clear and whoever is holding the dog is in a t shirt. Well it’s pouring down rain and 45 degrees today but okay whatever. After my wife didn’t reply for a little bit, the seller immediately offered to half the price of the puppy. Hmm. So we agreed on a price and headed out there to have a look, make sure things were on the up and up.

Halfway to her residence she calls us. She sounds flustered. She said she just got out of a meeting and wouldn’t be home. I’m like okay thanks. We’ll touch base later maybe. She starts getting flustered and said she’s a busy mom of 4. I’m like yeah cool I get it thanks. Then she offers to meet us at an I-5 exit ramp — 25 miles south of her supposed residence. Bumfuck nowhere. I’m like yeah no thanks. My wife said earlier in the morning she had offered to meet her about 30 miles south of her residence so she “wouldn’t have to drive so far.” Nnnnnooooooo

Sounds like someone trying to avoid you knowing the location of a puppy mill.

Yeah, I want a dog for the next 15-20 years but 25 miles is just too far..

Some people don’t deserve dogs. Our pup Bella when she was little;

Are you misunderstanding me? The distance was not an issue — the seller kept making up reasons why we should meet her at an interstate off ramp for a puppy instead of her residence...

Or am I misunderstanding you...

No.. I’m saying the seller actually thinks there are people out there who would jump and a 10 minute shorter trip for a puppy. That seller doesn’t deserve to have dogs. Like buying a dog on the side of the road is legit.

Are you looking at Choco Labs?

That lady sounds sketchy as hell. The puppy mill klaxons are going off just reading your story.

Do your family, and puppy mill puppies, a huge favor: go look for a pup at your local animal shelter. You’ll find LOADS of pure-breeds there, or maybe you’ll wind up falling in love with a mutt. Either way, don’t support an under-the-table industry that encourages animal abuse and inbreeding.

Man, that sucks. Around where I live, they can’t find enough homes for all the dogs and cats at the local shelters. One shelter even euthanizes over 40,000 animals a year! That’s what happens when you have local governments that refuse to pass spay/neuter ordinances.

I hope you guys are successful in finding a new pet. Give your kitties scritches for me. :)

Lol, our lab only guards the crumbs under the table.. Actually that’s not true; once the kids are in bed upstairs she goes and sleeps on the stairway.

The whole dog thing in WA is...weird. And fucked somewhere. Shelters from other states are shipping their dogs to WA for adoption. And you said in a comment that the local centers had no puppies.

It’s weird. Something weird is going on.

That number seems off. 13 animals an hour during an 8 hour shift if they ran 365 days a year.

I'm with the monkey. You're saying one shelter euthanizes over 3,000 animals a month?

I was slightly mistaken, .... the shelter receives approximately 60,000 animals a year, and according to their own spokesperson, they euthanize two out of every three animals they take in.

That means more than 36,000 euthanizations per year.

I’ve volunteered at this shelter. I’ve seen firsthand the steady stream of animals that come into its grounds. From cats, to dogs, to roosters rescued from illegal cockfighting rings, to turtles, rabbits, hedgehogs, and even the occasional goat.

They try their damndest to rehome as many animals as they can.

Livestock animals are often found homes with local ranchers and farmers.

Many breeds of dogs are exported out-of-area by private rescues that exist in regions where pet demand exceeds rescue pet availability.

But it’s simply not enough. There are too many animals due to a combination of this being a socioeconomically depressed suburban to rural region, and lax regulation of pet spaying/neutering.

I adopted my cat from this shelter. I would love to adopt more (cats and/or dogs) but it’s simply not within my current means to do so.

Ah gotcha. A little more realistic. My lady used to volunteer at the local Humane Society for years. We have a cat from there :)

A little more realistic? My original figure was off by 4,000 - 5,000. That’s not a lot. That means they’re still putting down around 100 animals a day, every day of the year.

I hate it. But at the same time — having volunteered at that shelter and adopting my own lil guy from there, I know the people are trying their best. They really give their all. It’s heartbreaking. :(

I guess you’re right about the number. I read 40k when you wrote 60k.

It's sad to see all the animals like that but it would be impossible to care for them yourself. Sucks.

Dog adoption here is weird no doubt. My sister ended up with a puppy from Georgia after weeks of looking at local shelters. I guess some guy has been loading up truckloads of dogs at kill shelters in the south and driving them to Seattle.
